Bhagavad Gita: Chapter V

Krishna continues to delve deeper into the nature of action and its relationship to the Divine state….to one’s Being.  Arjuna is about to engage in the action of battle just as we are engaged in the action of life and living.  A key then is to understand in every present moment how action rather than being an obstacle can become a means to liberation.  Yoga is seen as being yoked to the Divine inmost principle within and acting from that standpoint and perspective. Krishna emphasizes that the action has to be directed to selfless action, not ego centered action.  He talks about renunciation of ignorance, of false understanding of reality. What is Skillful action is acting from a still center where the mind is in equanimity rather than restless and scattered.  Such action is an offering or surrender to the Divine principle and is a path to the bliss of Nirvana.  Then one’s perspective or stand is not motivated solely by the dynamics at play at the personal ego level.

This is a short chapter but each verse is worthy of our attention and reflection.  The truths expounded here are also found in other religions as aids to making work sacred and transforming the very way we undertake it.

Please read Slokas 6 and 26 as we will be chanting them on May 14th.
